The decisions that move a romance launch most are made before release day: shelf, price, Kindle+, timing, comps and blurb language. Here is the list, in order.
A romance launch is mostly decided before release day. The six choices that matter most are which Amazon categories you list in, your launch and post-launch price, whether you enrol in Kindle+, when you release, which comps you target, and the language in your blurb. Get these right and your marketing has something to work with. Get them wrong and no amount of posting fixes it.
Choose categories where books like yours actually chart, not the biggest category you can justify. A book that ranks in a smaller, well-matched category gets seen by the right readers. Check who is in the top 50 of each candidate category and whether their covers, heat level and tone look like yours.
Many indie romance launches open low and then move to the sub-genre median. In October 2026 the median Kindle+ romance price was $5.99 in most sub-genres and $4.99 in Paranormal and Historical (see our sub-genre table). Pricing well below the median can read as lower quality. Pricing well above it needs a reason.
Look at how much of your sub-genre's top 50 is in Kindle+. In Dark Romance it is most of the chart. In Historical and Romantasy it is well under half. Series length matters too: long series earn more from page reads.
Avoid weeks when your sub-genre's chart is crowded with big releases, and use reading seasons where they help. A separate guide covers timing.
Comps decide who Amazon shows your book to and who your ads target. Use recent books in your niche that sell steadily. Our comp title guide explains how to find them.
Readers search and recognise books by specific moments, not genre labels. Lead the blurb with the trope readers are currently asking for in your sub-genre, and save the tropes everyone expects for later lines. Microtropes make good hooks.
The Launch & Relaunch Prep Report ($25) answers all six for one book, using live Amazon, Goodreads, Reddit and BookTok data: recommended categories with the reason for each, keywords, launch and settle price, a Kindle+ recommendation, timing, comps in three tiers, trope labels (Opening, Steady, Expected or Fading) and blurb language. Upload your manuscript and it reads the whole book. It also works for relaunching a published book. You can read a real, unedited example first.
KDP lets you pick up to three categories per book. Choose ones where similar books actually chart.
A low launch price can help early rank, but plan when you will move to your sub-genre median, which was $4.99 to $5.99 for Kindle+ romance in October 2026.
Yes. Tick relaunch and it focuses on repositioning: categories, price, blurb and comps for the current market.
